“One of the reasons I began teaching was to deepen my own understanding by guiding others. My mission is to empower people to live pain-free and enhance their quality of life through this transformative practice”
– Ian Hugh Grace
My journey
My journey with chronic back pain led me down many avenues in search of relief. I consulted numerous doctors and specialists, explored various methods, modalities, and therapies over the years, and while many of these provided temporary relief, it was often short-lived. There was clearly a blind spot that wasn’t being addressed, as my pain would frustratingly return. I had resigned to the fact that I would just have to live with pain and limitation.
In search of a solution once more, the Alexander Technique found me. This approach not only alleviated my pain but brought an array of welcomed side effects: clarity of thought, poise, and a freedom of movement I had forgotten. The lightness, ease of movement, and mental clarity I experienced from my first lesson were profound. The blind spot had finally been addressed.
My pain issue was not unlike Alexander’s own dilemma. Despite consulting numerous doctors, no one could provide a lasting solution to his issue. Frustrated and determined to find the cause, Alexander began to suspect that his own habits might be contributing to his problem. During one of his consultations, he had a pivotal conversation with his doctor.
Alexander: “Do you think it could be something that I am doing to myself that is causing my voice problem?”
Doctor: “Yes, it is possible. But if that is the case, you are the only one who can find out what it is.”
This work gave me a lasting, permanent way out of pain. Inspired by my own experiences, I embarked on an intensive journey to deepen my understanding and help others. After three years of study at the Alexander Teacher Training School of London (ATTS), involving over 2,100 hours of hands-on graduate and post-graduate training, I received my certification from the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT) in 2019.
Now, I help others find relief from pain as I did and discover the many benefits this technique offers: increased energy, improved balance, and heightened body/mind awareness. Whether addressing physical, emotional, or mental challenges, Alexander work offers a holistic shift, unlocking new pathways for growth and positive change.
My mission and motivation for teaching are to empower others to live a pain-free, vastly improved quality of life through
My work is about helping you discover how to release unnecessary effort and embrace ease, so you can move freely and live authentically. Together, we’ll cultivate a deeper connection between your mind, body, and soul, allowing you to feel truly at home in yourself.
The work transformed my life, and I am dedicated to sharing its benefits with others. At the heart of the Alexander Technique lies the belief that true understanding is best demonstrated through personal embodiment. Words can only go so far; your own refined use of yourself speaks volumes. Like any new skill or discipline, initial attempts to articulate your Alexander Technique experience may feel awkward, but with practice, your expression will become more eloquent. One of the reasons I began teaching was to deepen my own understanding by guiding others.
